Patrick Chappert-Gaujal's interior landscapes.
Landscape: Expanse of land that the eye can embrace in its totality.
If a landscape only exists in and by means of a limited visual framework,
one will better understand
why it satisfies the creative urges of the painter
by its uncertain and
voluntary character. By honoring
a piece of space, the painter defines
the space by taking it
from the exterior and transforming it into
an interior space. Uncertain
in their invention, but well constructed, the paintings of Chappert-Gaujal
are landscapes “par excellence” of these absolute
acts of creation. Pieces of space, the landscapes are
also pieces of nature.
And the interior landscapes of the painter in abstract form are not any
less of a
sensitive expression of nature in its most concrete and colorful
aspects. The canvases of Chappert-Gaujal
are full of mediteranean blue:
blue grey, blue green and sea green; ocres and reds of the wine country
in
this southern
region of Languedoc where he lives, deep greens like the pine
forests of La Franqui and even
his greys are illuminated by the harshness
of the mediterranean sun.
Pieces of nature, the landcapes of Chappert-Gaujal
are also nature in pieces-driftwood given up by the sea,
bits of cork or
rubber, ground and dried by the sun
and the salt, arranged on the canvas, add to the work of
the landscape
artist - the voluntary act to define a piece of nature, by adding natural
elements or elements
returned to nature
all the while preserving all of their material strength, without ever
falling into
the cliché of representation.
